Appendix
The appendix is a small, finger-like structure at the junction of the small and large intestine with no significant role in digestion. Common diseases include appendicitis and tumours such as mucocele and adenocarcinoma.
Symptoms:
- Abdominal pain starting around the belly button, shifting to the right lower abdomen
- Nausea, vomiting, fevers, distension, loose stools
Diagnosis:
- Routine blood tests, Ultrasound abdomen and pelvis, CT abdomen and pelvis
Treatment:
- Laparoscopic Appendicectomy
- Laparoscopic or open limited ileo-ceacal resection / Right hemicolectomy
Laparoscopic Appendicectomy: A common procedure where the appendix is removed through small keyholes.
Laparoscopic or Open Limited Ileo-ceacal Resection / Right Hemicolectomy: In complicated cases, the appendix and adjacent intestines are removed, restoring intestinal continuity.
