Diagnostic Laparoscopy and Biopsy for Undiagnosed Abdominal Diseases
Abdomen is not called a ‘Pandora's box’ without any reason. Diseases in the abdomen are not always straight-forward.
Despite having multiple sophisticated investigations like CT scans, MRI, PET-CT, etc., certain conditions still remain undiagnosed. In some cases, findings on imaging may appear non-specific or indeterminate and will need a tissue bit or biopsy for a definitive diagnosis.
Laparoscopy in these situations can double up as a diagnostic modality.
Here, under general anaesthesia, a laparoscope is inserted into the abdominal cavity to completely examine all the visible organs including the liver, stomach, omentum, diaphragm, spleen, small and large intestine, appendix, mesentery, lymph nodes, omentum, uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, adhesions, hernias, etc.
Based on the findings, surgery can be continued to provide a definitive cure or at least a biopsy can be taken from the abnormal area to aid further treatment.
